Our History
A Legacy of Compassion: 1976-Present
For five decades, SolMateo has stood as a steady source of hope and support for San Mateo County’s most vulnerable community members.
Our story began in 1976, when a group of visionary women recognized a profound gap in local mental health resources. Determined to make a difference, they formed the Belles for Mental Health—an auxiliary of the Mental Health Association—dedicated to supporting individuals facing mental illness and suicidal crisis. Working alongside the Suicide Prevention Auxiliary, these early advocates championed the “diamonds in the rough,” people whose struggles were too often overlooked or misunderstood.
In 1982, the strength of shared purpose brought the Belles and the Suicide Prevention Center Auxiliary together as the Community Service League (CSL). This unification created a more powerful, coordinated force for mental health advocacy and community support.
Over the following decades, CSL expanded its reach while remaining deeply committed to its founding belief: no one should have to navigate mental health challenges alone.
In 2018, we embraced a new identity that more clearly reflected our mission. The Community Service League became Sol of San Mateo County—SolMateo—with the guiding message “Shining Light on Mental Health.” This evolution was more than a name change; it was a renewed commitment to illuminating pathways to care, compassion, and hope for every person who needs it.
Celebrating 50 Years in 2026
As we approach our 50th anniversary, SolMateo stands stronger and more united than ever. Our long‑standing partnership with the Mental Health Association of San Mateo County (MHA), as well as our new strategic partners National Alliance on Mental Illness San Mateo County (NAMI SMC), and Family Connections allow us to provide comprehensive, integrated support for families facing mental health challenges, homelessness, and crisis situations.
Half a century later, the mission set forth by our founders remains not only relevant but essential. Their compassionate vision continues to guide our work and illuminate the path toward a healthier, more hopeful future for our community.
